Top 7 Spa Trends for 2022
Health and wellness are being prioritised as we leave behind two years of stress and illness as a result of the pandemic. Spa treatments, once considered a special luxury, are now becoming an important addition to holistic wellness. They’re constantly adapting to the evolving needs of holistic wellbeing and we’re seeing some interesting incoming trends as we head into 2022. Here’s a look at some of them.
1. Traditional wellness
Many spas are now drawing on traditional therapies that have been in practice for centuries. Age-old Chinese and Ayurvedic methods, which seek to connect mind and body, are becoming more popular. Healing therapies such as reflexology and acupuncture will continue to dominate in the New Year, with middle eastern treatments also becoming more mainstream.
2. Skinimalism
This is the latest movement that encourages a much more minimalist approach to skincare. Rather than investing in endless products and getting caught in a cycle of consumerism, skinimalism looks at scaling back the amount of product used. This allows the skin’s natural microbiome to work as nature intended, without the addition of harmful chemicals. We’ll see more makeup products infused with skincare and spa treatments going back to basics.
3. Rasul Chamber
As mentioned earlier, the middle eastern treatments will become prominent in spa treatments and this is one really interesting option. The Rasul Chamber is a middle eastern mud ritual where you enter a heated steam chamber and a sugar scrub is applied to your skin. Then you rinse off and are covered in a mud clay which is washed off in a shower.
4. Nature therapy
Many of these traditional therapies include reconnecting with nature as a way to revitalise mind, body and soul. Nature therapy is most certainly going to dominate in 2022 with spa treatments incorporating much more natural settings and products. Outdoor massages and forest retreats will be great ways to bring the natural element in. In fact, this touches on another traditional therapy practiced in Japan known as forest bathing. Here you simply immerse yourself in the natural environment to lower blood pressure, improve concentration and lower inflammation.
5. Contactless treatments
With Covid-19 still a concern going into 2022 we’re likely to see more contactless treatments. One great example is the contactless massage chair. This zero gravity massage chair lifts you up into a sleeping posture, supporting your body and decompressing the gravity force. The chair then massages along the spine, alleviating any tension and nerve tightness. This is a great spa treatment as it’s not only contactless, but is more affordable and quicker - with all the benefits of massage. There’s no need to de-robe and have oils applied, so it can be done during a break from work. Good spas will include aromatic oils and flavoured water for a more sensory experience.
6. Mental wellbeing
The health benefits of spa treatments have always been mentally beneficial as well by lowering stress levels and anxiety while reducing pain. However, with the spike in depression and stress these past few years, the need for relaxation methods will increase as people seek to improve their mental wellness. Spa treatments will likely be more tailored to individual issues so as to better improve the physical and mental condition overall.
7. Digital detox
There will also be a focus on digital detox in 2022 as people really feel the need to disconnect. The pandemic has forced everyone to communicate online, but so much digital interaction comes with its own level of stress and anxiety. Spas will no doubt offer a digital detox through wellness retreats, nature walks, meditation and workouts away from the wired world.
